Review of the Hunter 42 by Larry Clark

Year built 1993
Location of boat West coast of Mexico and Baja
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Blue water, extended passages
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. We decided some years ago we wanted a Hunter 42 Passage. It took us 2.5 years to find this exact boat.
Gear that's been added DVD player, XM radio, HF Ham Radio, insulated backstay. Previous owner added Northern Lights 6KW genset, diesel heater, watermaker (700 GPD) with high pressure wash down, inner stay with storm sail, extra anchors, full boat covers, enclosed cockpit panels. dinghy davits, forward deck storage locker, radar, forward looking sonar, two additional winches, 3 blade max prop, Raycor fuel filters, extra 40 gal fuel tank, etc. etc.
Structural or complex improvements Replaced and upgraded the regrigeration system.
The boat's best features Interior room. Excellent performance under sail or power.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Refrigeration system. Lack of insulation around freezer and refrigerator boxes. DC electrical problems, wiring, alternator, regulator, etc. Waste (head) tank, hoses, connections (bad smell after flush).
Sailing characterisitcs Good performance in light to moderate winds. Good balance, requires very little weather helm. Easy to set up and sail with small crew of one or two people.
Motoring characterisitcs Good speed at even lower RPM, saves fuel.
Liveability Nice large aft cabin and head. Plenty of storage under seats, closets, cabinets, lockers, etc. Some unused storage areas that cannot be accessed. We plan to cut access panels. Under V berth seats are the largest areas that can be used.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Very good. Quick response to questions with good information and access to their vendors.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any About normal for dealing with a broker. Even after the broker arranged for a surveyor, we found many hidden problems that should have been found on the survey inspection.
Other comments Before we settled on a Hunter, we bareboat rented almost all the other brand names, and several hull designs. We love the entire Hunter product line.
