Review of the Hunter 216 by Mark O

Year built 2004
Location of boat Connecticut
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. Great Boat with a lot of potential.
Gear that's been added I have added just about everthing that you can put on a boat. I am in the marine business so I was able to do it all at a pretty good price. I have added: Navigation lights,Ray ST40 depth and speed, Ray ST40 Electronic Compass(Both mounted on a swing out bracket that swings out into the companionway),Boomkicker(boom support),VHF Radio,AM/FM/CD stereo(Mounted in a white plastic box on the port side in the cabin along with the fuse/switch panel and 12V outlet(to charge my cell phone or for 12V spotlight)),Tiller autopilot(great for taking down the Main when you are alone or for those long light air tacks or when motoring),Running Backstays with 4-1 tackle(HUGE improvment upwind in heavy air),Spinnaker and Main Traveler, 12V Battery, Cunningham, Reef lines,Modified the outhaul,Windex,VHF Antenna,Anchorlight(all at the top of the mast).I think thats it?
Structural or complex improvements I have sanded and faired the centerboard. Added Running Backstays. Added Boomkicker(NO more topping lift)
The boat's best features Fast and fun boat to sail
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The only thing that I am not happy with isn't part of the boat, It's the Trailer, I think that the trailer that Hunter packages with this boat is a piece of crap.I will be having a new trailer build this winter. An expense that I didn't think I would have to deal with this soon.
Sailing characterisitcs Early the past spring, I had a problem with heading into the wind in heavy air but after adding the running backstays that has greatly improved. This boat will plane downwind in about 15 knots.( A little hard on the spinnaker, But FUN)
Motoring characterisitcs Don't like to motor
Liveability
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Sound Boatworks in Westbrook, CT Great people to deal with
