Review of the Hunter 146 by Richard Blackburn

Year built 2005
Location of boat Walker, Minnesota
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Probably. I find it quite a bit more tender than most small boats I have sailed.
Gear that's been added A trolling motor and a gel marine battery. I also rigged a double pulley system which I fastened to a eye bolt which replaced The bolt holding the mast holder on the trailer. I hook it to the jib and can hoist the mast from outside the boat. I am considering adding the long air bags used on some utility boats to increase stability when boarding.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features It is attractive and well designed. It moves well in light air. Very spacious seating, but not easy to move around in because of its tippiness.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. If Hunter intends to market this boat to beginners, it had better hire a technical writer to make the manual useable and understandable to someone not used to rigging boats. It is no doubt the worst set of instructions I have ever seen for a purchase of this size. Hunter may even be liable for any accidents from improper setup or sailing. One such instance is the positioning of the line lock on the lower block on the main sheet. An experienced sailer knows how to "pop the sheet" if the boat heels too far. But the locks are shipped in the lowest position, so the main sheet can't be "popped."
Sailing characterisitcs It is less stable than the Hobie 16 I sailed for many years. My wife is hesitant to sail because of the difficulty of entering the boat. We're both in our 60's and not very agile. Gusty winds are a challenge sailing solo as the boat heels so quickly.
