Review of the Hunter 28.5 by stephen ostrander

Year built 1986
Location of boat Grand Traverse Bay, MI
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? She needed lots of TLC but was very affordable. Also she fits in a 30' slip. Improvements were made on later models. A good value for an under 30' boat.
Gear that's been added 160 genoa, knot, depth, fuel/water separator, 2 bank battery, loran, charger,
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Yanmar diesels are the best. Boat sails well. Strong spars. Big boat feel. Great value.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. B
Sailing characterisitcs Very maneuvreable under power or sail. Sails well, points well. Reccomend add 150 genoa. Downwind sailing hampered by B
Motoring characterisitcs Backs well, very agile, not underpowered. 2GM20s are great engines. Docks well. 2GMs are fuel misers.
Liveability Fixed dinette gets in way sometimes. Slightly small cabin for family of four. Great 2 person boat. Added 2 battery system and charger. Cockpit is too small, too many lines about.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Torresen Marine Inc are good people, very accomadating.
