Review of the Hunter 28.5 by Mark R. Miller

Year built 1979
Location of boat Salina, Kansas
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, definetely. Love the room and styling. Back in 1979 they put teak on and in the boat, not fiberglass. Much better than today's models.
Gear that's been added Good quality stero components, cell phone, radio, etc.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Reliable engine. Roomy cabin, roomy top deck.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Not too crazy about the stern rail. It is uncomfortable for the passenger riding alon side of the captain's chair. Have considered modifying a more comfortable area there.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails very well but as everyone will attest, I do NOT like the swept back spreaders in a down wind situation. Other than that she sails very well and acceptably fast.
Motoring characterisitcs The engine works perfectly and is very reliable. This is a great feature of the boat. It is a fuel miser and starts quickly and performs great. I will never have a gas engine again.
Liveability OK for a 28.5 footer. I wouldn't want to live on for longer than a week. I think the walls would begin to come in a bit.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) no
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
