Review of the Hunter 170 by david

Year built 2005
Location of boat Michigan
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? A qualified yes. I was expecting a much more stable boat based on what the salesman said. But, it's tenderness is fairly easy to get used to. The more experience I get on the boat, the more I am coming to love it.
Gear that's been added None.
Structural or complex improvements None.
The boat's best features Space! The wide open cockpit is wonderful. I also enjoy the higher boom, so you don't need to be ducking all the time. The boat sails in just a whisper of a breeze, is very comfortable up to 10 knots. The boat is good looking and quite easy to clean.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The centerboard is hard to raise and lower, I often have to help the crew (either my wife or teenage kids) wrestle it into position. The furling system for the jib seems to be a weak point. It is often difficult to completely unfurl. Sometimes the furling line gets tangled in the bobbin and completely jams.
Sailing characterisitcs As mentioned, it sails in a variety of conditions, the boat sails beautifully up to 10 knots. From 10 to 15, you need to be on your toes. You really need to reef the main if the wind approaches 15 knots and be very attentive to ease the main or head up to contol the heeling. Much over 15, I would probably stay on shore.
Motoring characterisitcs Don't have a motor yet, but planning to get one. I wish I had bought it at the time I bought the boat (I did think to add the motor mount at the time of sale).
Liveability Good for an afternoon nap.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have emailed them a few questions and they have been quick to respond.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought from a dealer, but have not had contact since the sale.
