Review of the Hunter 26.5 by Roger Wenman

Year built 1987
Location of boat Lake Tenkiller, Oklahoma
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 6
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, it's ideal for lake sailing. Feels safe, even in wind gusts (we get them out of coves and around points on this lake) it just turns itself up wind unless I hold the tiller in my lap.
Gear that's been added No. I came with lots of extra stuff, like roller furling, boom kicker and winches.
Structural or complex improvements Previous owner replaced the Nissan 8hp with a 4hp Merc. It's easy to handle, but I have to use the ladder to start and operate.
The boat's best features The walk out transom is great for letting kids swim. Also, I use it to steer with the outboard and the the tiller to get in and out of tight spots (before raising the sails.)
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Sun damage to the little plastic slides holding the mainsail to the mast. They tend to snap off when jibing (poorly.)
Sailing characterisitcs It will lean way over (30deg or so) in strong winds. I carry full sails in 15+ winds and get caugnt in 20-25 knot gusts. Lots of fun.
Motoring characterisitcs Very few. Just in and out of our small cove. Except when the wind quits, then we motor home. It will do 5 knots at 3/4 throtle, even with the 4hp replacement motor.
Liveability Ok for an overnight.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) None
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments Biggest and best without going to a diesel engin and wheel steering.
