If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? The 37' Hunter Legend sailboat is everything we were looking for in a sailboat considering the waters we were going to be sailing. Certainly the interior space is well thought out and the layout makes it a great boat for entertaining friends. This is our 4th year with the boat and we were given a chance to buy a Hunter Passage 42' center cockpit that is just barely used and decided in spite of the lack of headroom in the aft cabin we will stay with out boat. The Passage series is more of a motorboat with sails than a sailboat from our limited exposure to the 42 boat in question.
Gear that's been added When we bought the boat it had been somewhat neglected, not badly, and so we had to do some upgrades. All of this only added to our pleasure with the boat. An espar was a must, the whisker pull was likely not neccessary, but what the heck we may use it sometime. A replacement for the dutchman system of furling was critical as it never seemed to work and the main reefing system the factory installed seemed a great idea but always jammed. The re-uphosltery in the boat simply makes it more enjoyable and modern. And so it goes....
Structural or complex improvements The Dutchman Furling system the factory had instaled did not function properly so it has been replaced by a lazyjack system. Most often there are just my wife and myself so the flaking of the sail becomes an issue seeing as my wife, who is the crew, weighs about 115 lbs soaking wet. The in boom reefing of the main sail never seemed to work properly so a traditional reefing system has been installed. We are in the process of installing a rigid vang to replace the topping lift as that will make the boat easier to rig.
The boat's best features interior space, structural integrity of the hull, the copious amounts of teak inside the boat. Wow. The quality of the 37' Hunter Legend will make it difficult to sell this unit and buy a new boat. Maybe Hunter will meet that rigorous standard and if so we would be willing to upgrade.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. In boom reefing of the main. Furling of the gib is challenging The boat should have had a rigid boomvang The headroom in the aft cabin The boom is so low it is almost impossible for a cockpit enclosure without raising the boom.
Sailing characterisitcs Love the handling of the boat in all weather and for a 37' boat with almost 13' beam we can really move.
Motoring characterisitcs Pleasant and very comfortable.
Liveability Ah does it get any better. I guess the headroom and certain other amenities in the 42 Passage are better but of it's generation this is as good as it gets. The bathroom is a little tight, as I am only 5' 6" and 150 lbs one can only guess at how the big people feel.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Excellent on all accounts.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
