Review of the Hunter 140 by Paul Housman

Year built 1998
Location of boat Lake Barkely,Kentucky
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, We were also looking at a JY15. Choose the 140 for it's comfort and stability. I would have preferred a little more sail area for speed but the other half was hesitant.
Gear that's been added Just some hardware to decrease set up and launching time
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features It handles well in stiff wind. Surprised how it moves in light air. We've had three people plus my self on board and the boat was really stable
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Have had problems with the self bailer. Don't like the small rings they use for clevis pins. Made for midgets or someone with more dexterity than I. Would like to be able to put cleats on the stern for occasional mooring. Other than glue I can't see anyway of fastening. I haven't seen the advantage of a furling jib on this boat yet. Maybe someone can explain. Probably not using it correctly. Extended tiller needs a ratcheting pin to hold in a certain position
Sailing characterisitcs Easy to handle solo. very forgiving boat.
Motoring characterisitcs use paddles when no one is looking
Liveability I can stretch out and sleep in it when my wife kicks me out of the house
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Fairly positive
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any He's bent over backwards to help me solve my problems
