Review of the Hunter 44 by Tom Wolanzyk

Year built 2005
Location of boat Charlevoix, MI
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes! Great value, well built, ammenities abound, not many problems for a new boat after 450 miles under the keel.
Gear that's been added Cockpit enclosure, radar, chart plotter, auto pilot, max prop.
Structural or complex improvements None required yet.
The boat's best features Product meets our needs. Might not be a true "blue water cruiser" but sure meets our needs / requirements. Boat is comfortable, bright interior, large cockpit, plenty of creature comforts. Can stay on the boat for a week without feeling like I've been living in a closet.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Mast rake, prop, fuel gauge, Bose System
Sailing characterisitcs Boat sails well although not enough time to be able to fine tune for performance
Motoring characterisitcs Hull is easily driven, no "pounding" in chop as experienced in former 410. New Yanmar 4JH4E smooth and quiet, excellent fuel economy.
Liveability Excellent. Plenty of room for the active grandchildren. Plenty of galley storage, refrige and freezer big improvement over past boats
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Great response. Some problems in getting technical information. Mostely related to Hunter purchased and installed components.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Purchased from Toledo Beach Yacht sales. Boat prep very well done. Took delivery on a Friday, sailed Saturday and departed for a 400 mile move on Monday. A few problems along the way but no major difficulties. Attribute a lot to the commissioning activity at TBY. Problems that did occur addressed promptly.
Other comments Visited factory before purchase. Very helpful created sense of confidence in product and Hunter team. Big change since the '80s. Would not even have considered a Hunter 10 years ago. Bought a used 1999 410 last year and liked it so well that we purchased a new 44AC this year. The 410 was a great boat but Hunter continues to make significant improvements.
