Review of the Hunter 27_75-84 by Stephen O'Brien

Year built 1981
Location of boat Croton-on-Hudson
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, the Cherubini Hunters are fabulous boats -- solid, stable, good looking, easy to get information on, and a tremendous value. I got lucky in that I had no idea just how good a boat this was when I bought it.
Gear that's been added Boom vang
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features (In no particular order) 1. Solid construction -- good fiberglass layup, heavy lead keel, no hull blistering, strong standing rigging. 2. Stability in high winds (I've been out in as high as 30 knots) with main reefed and no head sail. 3. Standing headroom. 4. Large interior. 5. Easy to sail single-handed. 6. Terrific value -- less expensive than any comparable boat. 7. Slotted toe rail, great for snatch blocks, attaching fenders and spring lines. 8. Super reliable Yanmar diesel. 9. Main is sheeted over cabin, doesn't clutter the cockpit. 10. Lots of storage space in cabin and cockpit lockers. 11. Classic teak interior. 12. Wheel steering. 13. Swim ladder. 14. Shrouds tie into ubolts that are themselves anchored into the toe rail -- very secure system without deck leak issues. 15. Great access to engine and stuffing box. 16. Pressurized water.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. No complaint about anything.
Sailing characterisitcs Great in all wind conditions. Very forgiving. I have read others complain about weather helm -- I disagree. A small amount of weather helm is desirable and the sails and backstay can be trimmed to adjust the level. Tracks like a freight train, but can turn quickly. Never have felt at risk or out of control.
Motoring characterisitcs Motoring is fine. I've never had a problem making headway with my 1GM. Others think it's underpowered, but I think it's just fine. Prop walk, of course -- like most sailboats. So what? I use it to my advantage to pull the boat towards the dock as I come in. Frankly, now that I've learned to use the prop walk to my advantage, I don't think I'd want to get rid of it.
Liveability Don't live on it, but it seems as liveable as a 27 footer can possibly be.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Never dealt with them.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Not applicable.
Other comments The Cherubini hunters are really special. Check one out if you have a chance.
