Review of the Hunter 40 by Ben Ray Brown Jr.

Normal wind strength 10-15 knots

Liveaboard? Yes  
Owner bought the boat in 1993  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? No. I would have done more research and bought something more suited to Blue Water Cruising which is something I am finding that I want to persue. I would also have investigated the holding tank problem associated with this model. I ended up having to chisel out the old rotten holding tank courtesey of the previous owner, resulting in damage to the tek and holley deck on the port side aft stateroom.  
Gear that's been added I added a new Ray Marine auto pilot, new stereo with MP3 Playback and an external jack for MP3 Player.  
Structural or complex improvements replacing the aft holding tank, replacing a section of the aft deck, replacing the strut which was damaged.  
The boat's best features It is big and laid out pretty well.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. holding Tank !!! Bad smells associated with the heads. Water seepage throughout the boat causing mildew. The deck drains could be better. An hour meter for the engine would have been nice, guages for teh holding tanks would be good. A snapping in place system for the saloon cushions would be good.  
Sailing characterisitcs Suprisingly stout and able sailor. Ive sailed her doun the entire west coast in some very rough conditions and she came through like a champ.  
Motoring characterisitcs Good.  
Liveability Good but need to continuously ATTACK bad odors.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Very good once I figured out the system.  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I wish I would have had more time to search for the right boat for me, but hey. I am overall happy with my boat.
