Review of the Hunter 22 by Mark

Year built 1981
Location of boat Santa Rosa Beach, FL
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Most definately, very well rounded boat. Great for first time sailors, and as others have repeatedly said, virtually impossible to into trouble in. Great layout with very well thought out use of space.
Gear that's been added Tiller autopilot, VHF radio, AM/FM/CD/DVD/TV deck with 8" flip-down monitor, Garmin Chartplotter/sonar combo, Bilge pump, Onboard automatic battery charger, 2 burner gas cooktop, Magma grill, 5 step folding stainless fixed transom ladder, bimini top, CDI roller furling, removed manual galley pump replaced with f/w pump and faucet, masthead/foredeck light, daul axle trailer.
Structural or complex improvements Replaced ABS portlights with polished stainless portlights 3" longer. Replaced forward hatch, replaced both bulkheads with new ones as well as floorboards using marine plywood with high gloss mahogany wood grain plastic laminate. Replaced ALL other wood pieces inside and out with new mahogany varnished to 6 coats, Striped bottom paint and repaired approx 300 blisters then epoxy barries coated. Completely rewired moved and added additional panel, all new light fixtures inside and out. All new interior and cockpit cushions.
The boat's best features use of space
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. very difficult to install a bilge pump. don't really like how the headsail rides heavily on top of lifelines. I never figured out what the space right of the sink was for. My best guess was possibly for trash, I dunno. I cut it out and put in a 2 burner stainless gas cooktop instead and ditched the alcohol stove which took way too long to cook with and now use that space to house the disposable propane bottle that fuels the cooktop.
Sailing characterisitcs excessive weather helm can be a problem.
Motoring characterisitcs Moves at 7.1 knots with a honda 8hp 4 stroke
Liveability Sailing solo or with one other weekends are just right. Anything more I think would be too cramped for me personally.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) none
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments Love the boat and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for one in this size range
