Review of the Hunter 19_93-96 by Douglas King

Year built 1994
Location of boat Central North Carolina
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1994
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It is the best compromise between comfort, trailerability, and sailing performance that we have ever found.Good Points: As easy to trailer, rig
Gear that's been added Yes, a lot!Compass, anchor chain, 2nd anchor, knotmeter/depthsounder, Bimini, removable shelves
Structural or complex improvements Modified companionway step/ballast tank vent, sealed valve openings in bottom of hull, rebuilt forehatch to seal properly
The boat's best features Transom gate, raised deck, lack of standing backstay, ratio of roominess
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Halyard cleats, bilge pump, spreaders, rudder, forehatch,
Sailing characterisitcs The boat is relatively slow; hull speed is 5 1/4 knots or so, but she feels fairly lively and responsive. At more than 15 heel the weather helm gets bad; at about 30 she "spins out" and goes head-to-wind. Handles a chop pretty well. We've sailed in 35 knots and 6-ft seas, including running Beaufort Inlet with a following sea- none came aboard!
Motoring characterisitcs Fine w/ 5hp
Liveability It's great for 2-7 people daysailing, 2 people weekending, cramped for longer periods. The cabin is comparatively large but there's no place to hang up wet things so it can get dank!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Fine when ordering parts; terible when reporting problems. It's hard to get in touch with a real person by phone, they usually don't know anything, and when you finally get an answer, they assumed I didn't know what I was talking about.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Yes, Keith Scott, who was 90% great- made warranty good on everything except halyard cleats-which he replaced with Harkens that I paid for
