Review of the Hunter 460 by Brett Shirley

Year built 2000
Location of boat Marina del Rey, CA
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I originally got the boat because it was the only model I could talk my wife into moving on to, but now after living on it for a year and sailing it I would get the same boat. This was our first boat.
Gear that's been added We are preping the boat for passage making. Will add: Backup auto pilot hs2 display in nav station generator watermaker davits solor Have added: Flat screen tv (Make wife comfortable) cockpit enclosure extra deck lights changed out 4 piece floor in saloon to 1 hinged extra 110 outlets changed shower fixtures
Structural or complex improvements Raised the floor in the anchor lock (boys at hunter should really get on this. This must be done if you dont want the anchor rode to get the funk.) Changed the direction the foward shower door opens. Originally opened into the room and would leak water into the room. Swiched it with the aft head door so now that one opens into the room and the foward door opens into the shower.
The boat's best features I know some people dont like the B & R rig but it makes a lot of sense to me. Easy to sail, doesn't need adjusting, can have a larger roach main. It is more redudant and disperses load into the hull better. I like open saloon, good headroom in cabins. Big roomy cockpit which once enclosed is a great space for lounging. Dick the vacuflush heads, a bit loud but no smell. Like the courtesy lights, non of my dockmates boats have them. Good visability from the helm. Basically the most spacious 46 made to date.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Hunter, hear me on this one. Fix the floor in the anchor locker and change the brand of hot water heater. Mine leaked due to a broken weld on the tank. They are manufactured here in Southern California so after I took the entire seat area apart (Screwed in from above and BELOW??) and got it out I visited the factory. Sat in the office until the finally repaired mine for free. When it goes agian, and it will I will get another brand. Are we sure the 110 fridge the the best we can do? It does stay cold but is power hungry and the water shooting out the side of the boat confuses and scares other boat owners at the moorings. The interior woodwork could be a lot better with not much more effort. I know it is a production boat and appriciate the great price but just a little cleaner shouldn't cost much more.
Sailing characterisitcs Well being my first boat I dont have much to compare it to but I can easily handel it alone in anything under 25 knots. I have sailed on some of my neighbors boats of similar size and the Hunter to be less complicated and just as fast if not faster.
Motoring characterisitcs Great Yanmar motor. I can do most of the maintance myself. I read alot about how difficult it is to stear sailboats in reverse. Once I get stearage you can lock the wheel and go straight with no problem. I back the boat into my slip and so does my wife. No problem.
Liveability Can't beat it. Wife would like larger wardrobe closets. I couldn't be happier.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) They were great. I still call my salesman Rick at H & S with questions a year later. I am sure he is getting tired of me by now but he doesn't let on.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Again great guys at H & S in Marina del Rey. Very helpful especially considering I was a first time buyer.
Other comments I really love this boat and can't wait to get it offshore. Ill let you know how it goes.
