Review of the Hunter 170 by Rick Dautzenberg

Year built 2004
Location of boat Tampa, Florida
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in NBOA
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, this is a very light weight sailboat. Easy to rig and very practical. This boat is a 2005 -First Delivery.
Gear that's been added Added a small step ladder to support the Mast while transporting. Hunter could not have thought the Mast support they give with the boat would actually work. It bent and twisted second time down the road.
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features Its light weight and easy to handle.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Rear mast support. Thin medal bracket does not support weight of mast during transport.
Sailing characterisitcs High wind gusts. Make sure you get a mast float for this sailboat. Capsizing is not fun in this boat.
Motoring characterisitcs I have a short shaft Honda 2.5 and it works fine. I read that a short shaft is not long enough - not true.
Liveability N/A
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) They were slow to respond until I told them should have bought a Catalina - then the response was fast.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any NBOA of Sarasota gave us a 2004 model and told us it was Brand New. Turned out the trailer was 2002 and the boat had a torn sail. They replaced the boat and trailer with a 2005.
Other comments Very easy to set up. Takes only 10 minutes and you are out on the water. Fun sailboat - for the price you can't beat it.
