If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? We spent a year locating and purchasing the Hunter 280. Having spent a season on the boat, we feel that this was an excellent boat to spend in Colorado
Gear that's been added Bimini, 110 charger, BBQ
Structural or complex improvements None was needed
The boat's best features The 280 is the last of the open interior. We had a Hunter 26 and wanted to find a larger Hunter with the same layout. There is plenty of room for three adults for the weekend. Hunter makes an fine sail boat. The LPG stove is an excellent addition to assist in food preperation. It sails and points well and even with the gusty wind, we have had no problems with staying on course.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Continue to have problems with leaks in the cabin fore windows. Tried to remove them without success. We will try to come up with a solution in 2005 as it causes damage to the forward cushions.
Sailing characterisitcs Here in Colorado, we have to always expect that the wind will do a 360 with an added gust that catches many off guard. The Hunter 280 handles very well and my wife enjoys the stability along with the ability to reef when needed.
Motoring characterisitcs The Hunter 280 has a tendency to walk when we try to back into our slip. I have found that I need more speed in reverse to have control when backing. Flying in reverse into the slip is a bit hard on the nerves while all on the dock are watching. So far the slip has not bit the boat.
Liveability For two or three people the Hunter 280 is great. There is enough room between the cockpit and salon for all the activities necessary to have an enjoyable time. We use it as our cabin away from home during the warm months.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) The Anchorage has been most helpful. Even though we bought the boat from a private party in Alabama, they have assisted in recommendations for locating items needed to repair worn parts.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments We highly recommend the Hunter to anyone looking for an excellent sail boat. If my wife ever want to live else where (more water), I would like to look at the Hunter 40.5
