Review of the Hunter 27_89-94 by Jim and Eileen Shugart

Year built 1992
Location of boat Smith Mountain Lake, VA
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Oh, yeah....no comparison for value for the dollar. It was a wonderful upgrade from 10 years aboard a MacGregor 25'. We want to start trailering to the Chesapeake Bay someday, but for now we enjoy it as our lake cottage and daysailer.
Gear that's been added Slat bag, custom cockpit cushions, 9.9 Mariner outboard, VHF, Sunto compass, Tridata instruments, manual motor tiltup gadget (saves your back), teak stovetop, mag rack, various towel and paper racks, fully battened Hook mainsail, lazy jacks, waffle foam on main berth, ship's click and barometer, solar ventilator fan in fwd hatch, replaced screw knobs on windows with cam locks for quick and easy open/closing, 2nd batterh and Perko switch and DC voltage gauge, mast raising system, trailer, Delta 22 lb anchor with 20 ft chain and 200' 1/2 line, vinyl steps on stern ladder
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features cabin roominess, headroom, walkthru transome, pack porch, good cockpit, good tiller steering, high freeboard, with outboard can turn easily either fwd or backing
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. v-berth foot height, no top cabin ladder step, no traveler, no steps on stern ladder rungs, icebos draining into bilge, wind pushes bow off easily when backing
Sailing characterisitcs good in any wind, not too tender, good groove at 15 degrees heel or 20 at higher wind, mainsail backwinds from trimmed genoa due to no traveler to center boom
Motoring characterisitcs Ok since getting outboard without stupid cockpit controls and those stiff cables
Liveability Good...couldn't be better in a 26.5' boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) the customer service guys are great
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any some good and some not so good
