Review of the Hunter 23 by j bass

Year built 1985
Location of boat Rhode Island
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes.
Gear that's been added cam cleats, batteries, lights, bottom paint, windex.
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features nice starter boat for a small family learning to sail. easy to understand rigging for first timers.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. weather helm is tough in 15+ wind. needed to learn to reef main early.
Sailing characterisitcs responds well in medium wind. as i progressed through my second year with the boat i learned to cut down sail in 15+ so that i could manage the boat.
Motoring characterisitcs 8.5 hp original motor from 1985 still performs well.
Liveability Basic amenities are fine for overnights with 2 small kids, more than that would be tough, unless you are close to shore services. expectations have to be realistic for a 23ft boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) haven't.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any didn't
Other comments If/when i upgrade i would look at hunters first.
