Review of the Hunter 420 by jason hogge

Year built 2004
Location of boat va dc md
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes
Gear that's been added another flat screen, playstation2, davits, dingy, ob motor stand, ob motor hoist, anchor float, full plastic and or screen inclosure two 1500 btu heaters for cockpit. Jagermiester tap machine
Structural or complex improvements moved the microwave up to acomodate toaster oven below. Solar shades. removed table
The boat's best features great in rough water/ hard blows dealer service great space inside as well as out side
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. It's a long way for the rudder cable to twist and turn back to the quad. I may change to hydro or a larger quad if hunter makes one. 2 top side gell coat bubbles on compound curves. wish it had a real floor vs lam. screens could have been thought about more wish it had more hatches in celing anchor windless is a low profile vertical mounted drum. It has it's issues. I wish it was the horizontal one from the 456 Truster can not be added do to clearence issues she backs down pretty well.
Sailing characterisitcs Down wind in 45+ knots and 6 foot seas and surffing the boat hit 11 knots SOG in light down wind conditions I will roll in the main just a bit to un shadow the jib. Did not buy an asymetrical but if sailing more than a few hundred miles from home on a regular basis I would get one along with adding the extra rigging for a storm sail.
Motoring characterisitcs The boat can pass just about everybody.(8 knts) she tracks well but she is a heavy steared boat
Liveability the boat is great we have had as many as 10 over night guest and as many as 18 for a day trip.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) na
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Nortons is on par with BMW level svc centers
Other comments Wish that they could get some different colors
