Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely! I searched for about a year for this one, looking at literally dozens of 22' - 30' boats. One step below was all it took. The total package just can't be beat. I origionally expected to spend week-ends and even weeks (don't we all) but that hasn't happened. Still it's been a wonderful boat to day-sail solo or with up to six on board. Other boats in this size range just don't compare. I've had two smaller boats before and expect this to be the last one I buy.
Gear that's been added Actually very little. A Stereo Cassette, VHF radio, Depth Guage, Microwave, Cockpit folding table, extra cushions and pillows, and odds-n- ends. This boat is a little unusual being an outboard model, but with the 110 Shore Power, recepticles, water tanks, etc. of the Inboard model. A 150% Roller furling Genoa is also on the boat since new. With Cruise-Pac we haven't needed to add much else.
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features The Cruise-Pac is a great concept. I appreciate all the "extras" that are included with Hunters that buyers would need to buy otherwise. This boat is stable, safe and comfortable to single-hand in light to moderate conditions.I also like the open interior design which makes it appear even bigger than it is. The aft bunk is very roomy and confortable ( and I'm 6'2" and over 200 lbs). The sail plan, especially with roller furling, is great for short/single handed sailing as well. The cockpit has been quite adequate for 4-5 at once, even when things get busy. And the walk-thru transom is a hit as well.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. 1)The control cables for the outboard must be disconnected in order to tilt the motor up. They have been replaced once already and will need it again soon because of the sharp bends. (I'm looking for more flexible ones next time). 2) The ice box drains into the bilge, and the outboard models don't come with a bilge pump! Should tie into the sink's drain instead, or a pump could be added easily.
Sailing characterisitcs We test sailed the boat on Smith Mountain Lake, Va. in gusts over 30, with the main reefed and only a small portion of jib unfurled! Very exciting! Since then we pretty much stick to the under 20 knot days. As I single-hand it most of the time with little children aboard I tend to keep it flat. Light air performance is good. It's much more stable than centerboard boats I've been on, but still a little tender for a fixed keel. I've not raced, but understand that H-27's do quite well.
Motoring characterisitcs The origional Tohatsu 8 seems fine for our lake. It moves right along, though backing into the slip in a cross wind is a bit anxious at times. Steering control is excellent in both directions
Liveability It's almost excessive for day sailing. We three (the wife and our 8-year-old) have spend a few nights aboard with no problems. Spring and Fall are quite comfortable. A fan really helps on hot N.C. summer nights. So far we have had room for everything and everyone! I look forward to being able to spend longer periods on her!I guess I like the fact that it is so comfortable, not at all like camping out.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter Marine has been very good to deal with. After buying the boat I called several times to get information on Specs, accessories, upgrades, etc. and always got answers. The Knot Line is interesting and informative. I hope to attend one of the Rendezvous next time one comes to this part of the country.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The dealer, American Marine and Sail of Moneta, Va, has been exceptional. Dave has worked with me from the very first inquiry I made about Hunters in general, through the process of deciding what type of craft would suit us best, and then finding, transporting and launching for me. Follow up after the sale has been good as well, finding me parts and sources for things as needed. He's even called just to check on me!
