Review of the Hunter 36_80-82 by Joe Daly

Year built 1980
Location of boat Tolchester MD
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, spent alot of time looking for a sailboat and looked at many. I came acroos this boat last Sept.2003, went for two sails and new it aws the sailboat I was looking for.
Gear that's been added Tore out toilet, soft holding tank bag and all related hose & hardware. Built new bulkhead under V-berth and install a new 30gal. holding tank, new toilet and all related hardware. Now it is a pleaseure with family on board and not feel guilty using the head. All new engine hoses, new stove unit and constructed a nice pullout trash cabinet where oven was. Much neater & practical for my use. Next is all new running rigging & a spiniker. New main will follow that.
Structural or complex improvements Hull is very sound and strong, I love the beefy chainplate connections. The forward bulkhead to support and contain a new holding tank was a fair amount of carpentry. But it came together well. Future projects will be replacing some soft deck areas along side the cabin and then skidgard the decks.
The boat's best features Very safe boat to sail, Fast & responsive. The 6300 pound keel and a draft of just under 5FT. is definetly a plus. the boat stiffins up quite well in a heavy wind and sails true.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The rusting base of the mast compression post is a concern, I will be coating this as much as I can to preserve it. Still solid but a concern. The high presssure achohol stove/oven had to go.
Sailing characterisitcs Points well, fast for her size, comfortable to handle, the main sheet & traveler is a little out of reach, so I dog down the wheel and move out to make any adjustment.
Motoring characterisitcs 20Q 2 blade, original motor. Runs well, hope it lasts me many more seasons. Fuel Efficency is exceptional.
Liveability Enjoyable
