Review of the Hunter 170 by Paul Depperschmidt

Year built 2002
Location of boat Lake Lanier, Georgia
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes - Good for what I do now. We bought a houseboat and the sailboat is a great compliment to it. I actually sail more now.
Gear that's been added In previous writeup. Reefing gear.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc.
Sailing characterisitcs Main reason for writing this report. I had considered the boat to be pretty touchy and was very difficult in high winds. But just recently I started to get up on the outside "rail" to balance the boat. I found I have much better feel for the boat and can manage the balancing much better. When sitting on the seats I just could not get enough weight where it needed to be. I would bend my back to the point where it would really start to hurt. While it does not have a toe strap, the center raised part makes it feel like one. Now I feel like I can manage any wind that is thrown at me. My boat and I have really found each other.
Motoring characterisitcs
Liveability It lived through two hurricanes this season. I had it in the water and the worst damage was a broken pin at the connection point for the main sheet.
