Location of boat Priest Lake, Idaho

How the boat is used Weekends and longer

Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1994
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. The Hunter 19 is easy to set up, easy to sail, and I feel secure in its ability to handle all types of weather conditions. When the wind is really strong, careful attention must be made to getting the jib excactly right or the wind will
Gear that's been added I purchased a cockpit cover for those hot, windless days. The cover uses two aluminum extension poles, and really cools down the entire boat.
Structural or complex improvements I use a 6 horsepower Evinrude, so I had to add an extender to mount the outboard at the back of the boat. This has worked well with no problems.
The boat's best features The Hunter 19 is simple to rig, and easy and fun to sail. It is also very forgiveable and safe. I have sailed through all types of weather, and it has performed admirably.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The Hunter 19 trailer has given me a few problems. The extension feature was very hard to work, and the wiring system kept shorting out because the ground was wired to the extension front and not the main frame. When I discovered this finally, I solved the shorting out problem. But the trailer is the weakest part of the boat package.
Sailing characterisitcs The Hunter 19 is an excellent sailing boat. When the wind is really strong, careful attention must be given the jib because if it is not set right, the wind will pull the bow into it. Otherwise, the boat is easy to handle and very fun to sail.
Motoring characterisitcs The Evinrude 6 that I have powers the boat very well.
Liveability The Hunter 19 has the stove and porta-potty under the seats. As a result, when camping it is slightly difficult to use them quickly. However, the convenience of having these items on a small 19' sailboat outweighs any difficulties. The electric light system also is very well designed and a pleasure to have on those dark nights under anchor.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I get the best results when dealing with Hunter direct. A phone call and an order will usually insure the part I am ordering arrives quickly. When I tried to order parts through the dealer, however, the process was greatly slowed. Some items never came in. I now call Hunter direct for any assistance or parts I need.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The dealer was very enthusiastic and helpful when I first bought my new Hunter 19 from him in 1994. However, the things the dealer promised me were not handled efficiently: the plastic over the front hatch was cracked and needed to be replaced;a batten was missing from the mainsail; a sail cover was needed; extenders were needed to mount my Evinrude 6. These problems were not solved until I finally called Hunter direcly.
