Review of the Hunter 31_83-87 by capt. dave

Year built 1986
Location of boat Tomahawk Bay, Portland, Or
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? YES!!! This has been a very good boat for us.
Gear that's been added Yes, we have added or replaced our; SEA TALK ST30 Speed sys. SEA TALK ST30 Depth sys. and have had installed": Raymarine ST40 Speed and Depth sys. this has the water temp. that is good to know around here, before you jump in the water.
Structural or complex improvements We needed to replace the rudder that came with the boat, as IT FELL OFF!!!! as we were running up the Columbia River on our maiden voyage from Seattle, Washington to our home port Portland Oregon. As we found out, the rudder post had been spliced at the factory, but as sometimes happens, the splice had been tacked together and a part root pass had been completed... But, it had not been finished for what ever reason,------------, (put your guess here), and went through production, and was mounted on this boat, sold to-----, sold again to us and five days after we get it, (it lasted over 18 years)and our trip from Seattle, through the Puget Sound across the Bar into the Pacific, down the Washington coast in 20+ knot winds and across the bar at Astoria, Oregon, plus 22 or so miles up the Columbia River. At which time the RUDDER PARTED, and we had to stop for repairs. More info if you want. E-mail me,, artuno4u@netscape.net
The boat's best features She ( FAITHFUL GIRL) sails well. nice balance and just all around fine boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. N/A except for the rudder
Sailing characterisitcs All good. Smoooothe ride to wind, If you balance things as needed, FAST on beam, FASTER than most on point or on reach. nice
Motoring characterisitcs She has a nice 18hp, Yanmar stock I have a MAX PROP adjusted to balance to power and RPM and she will do 7.2kph AT 2900-3100 RPM. it doesn't help to push her to hard, YA KNOW?
Liveability Well I say that she is great for two, on as much as 7 seven days of sailing, but it might be crowded for more at a length of time of three days or more. Although the water tank is not enough for showers and cooking for much more than three days. We carry extra fuel and water as needed.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) not much help
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments WE have the SEA TALK ST30 SPEED and DEPTH SYS for sale, contact us. they were on the boat for only 3, three months. Price to be discovered upon your request.
