Review of the Hunter 37-cutter by George Eland

Year built 1980
Location of boat Newcastle England
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes we would buy the same type but on reflection there are better 37's out there than the one we bought.
Gear that's been added full set of wind speed and direction plus depth and speed, radar, and a VHF for over here. A spray dodger (hood) and an 'A' frame to hang everything from at the rear. New stainless windows to replace those UV attacked plastic units. A GPS which has heads in the navigation and steering positions. Other than that the boat had everything that a long distance cruiser should have. Except a spinnaker pole it was washed away in an atlantic storm. Two weeks after the rudder. Oh when we first brought it to the North East of England we installed a blown air diesel heater, it is wonderfull.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features It sails well
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The rudder shaft broke but the new item has a heavier section tube.
Sailing characterisitcs Everything as we did over 10000 miles in her in less than three years including crossing the Atlantic and being in the Carribean during two summers.
Motoring characterisitcs Goes well for a 20hp motor but you need to think about it before trying to reverse.
Liveability Wonderfull
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) They are OK and will point you in the right direction for all of the bits and pieces to keep the boat functioning correctly and sailing.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We bought our boat from an American broker and it was great, boy they could teach the guys over here a thing or two or three.
