Review of the Hunter Xcite by Dean

Year built 2003
Location of boat Babylon, New York
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I was debating beteen a Sunfish and the Excite. I think the Sunfish is a better performer, but with a gang of small kids the Excite is a very user friendly boat. I have had as many as 4 kids onboard from ages 6 to 10 comfortably.
Gear that's been added Compass
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features The open cockpit design with the cut out back for drainage.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The rudder bracket bends easily and needs to be adusted with a pair of pliers from time to time.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat sails very recreationally. The boat is a little unstable in heavy down wind runs. I have gotten the boat to plane, but the center board needs to be all the way up. The boat is easly over powered in winds in excess of 20 knots and you need to let out sail inorder to have steering control.
Motoring characterisitcs Oar.
Liveability None
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any No.
