Review of the Hunter 23.5 by Scott McCartt

Year built 1995
Location of boat Lake Thunderbird Oklahoma
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, excellent first boat
Gear that's been added Added new house batteries (2 golf cart), solar panel, depth/speed/temp, Magma grill, shore power A/C (5,000 BTU window unit in companionway)
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Easy to sail, well laid out for day/weekend cruising, wide-open cockpit
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Manual sink is semi-usable - plan to replace with an in-line electric pump. Main sail could use 2 reef points.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat is a little tender but very forgiving, handled well in 25-30 knot winds/2-3 foot swells on larger lake
Motoring characterisitcs No problems other than worn out Suzuki 4 hp
Liveability Excellent for day/weekend sails, plenty of room in cockpit for 4-6 people, open transom makes swimming a breeze, interior sleeps 4 okay, alcohol stove is great!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No experience
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from Redbud Marina at Lake Oologah in Oklahoma. Jean and Mike were quite helpful.
