Review of the Hunter 216 by Bob Cowgill

Year built 2004
Location of boat Titusville, Floridaa
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes! I bought it for it's hull design and sailplan, with the small cuddy as a bonus.
Gear that's been added Sail cover, cockpit cushions(still enroute), porta-pottie, usual safety gear, anchor, dock lines and bumpers, motor.
Structural or complex improvements Inverted mainsheet cleat assembly per instructions from Hunter. Will be adding mast boot when it arrives.
The boat's best features Ability to move in very light air, very good shallow water capability, no-maintenance exterior surface.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. No problems as yet.
Sailing characterisitcs Was out in the "basin" with several other boats about my size last Saturday, and was able to hold my own or pull away from all of them in the light air, due in NO part to my ability! Having the grandkids running all over the cockpit, the cuddy, and the foredeck didn't upset it in the least.
Motoring characterisitcs Using the Hunter-supplied 4hhp Nissan 4 stroke at the less than 1/2 throttle reccomended break-in speed, the boat moves with authority. The very low transom makes visibility over the bow non-existent, however. I may try locking the motor in position and steering with the tiller, which should help in that regard.
Liveability I plan to add some opening portholes and other ameinities to the cuddy, which should greatly improve this facet. As it is, for the way we're using it just now, it's fine for daysailing.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Our dealer was experiencing some sluggish response from Hunter in resolving aa couple of issues, so I contacted Hunter directly. They were very pleasant to deal with, and responded to my requests quickly.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any My dealer, Lake Fariview Marina in Orlando was SUPER. Very nice people, most patient with me as I muddled through the boat shopping process.
Other comments I will be adding a custom bimini next, and am starting to research converting to wheel steering so I don't have to look at the world sideways all the time. We keep the boat rigged on the trailer at the marina, so it takes not time to get out on the water. So far, the 216 has met or exceeded all of my expectations.
