Review of the Hunter 216 by David Y. Eberspacher

Year built 2003
Location of boat Central Illinois Lake
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Maybe. Depends on Hunters response to my current problem.
Gear that's been added I added a V berth, a basic electrical system, and I had the jib modified with a roller furling sail cover cloth.
Structural or complex improvements Added running lights, anchor lights and mast-head light, which necessitated adding a 12 volt battery and electrical panel.
The boat's best features Performance.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I bought the boat at a boat show in Jan. of 2003. I picked the boat up and discovered the rudder would not fit the assembly. New rudder was shipped from Hunter. It did not fit. Back to the dealer (3 hours away). Repairs made. Last week-end on my first sail of the season the rudder assembly "popped" and I think that the bearings have broken or escaped from the rudder assembly. the rudder is now very "stiff" and it looks like another trip to the dealer.
Sailing characterisitcs Great performance when it was sailed last summer.
Motoring characterisitcs 3.5 hp Mercury is adequate.
Liveability Barely an overnighter.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Good on the rudder problem so far.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Good Dealer.
Other comments Great potential if Hunter would listen to its customers. Wiring for lights should be run as part of the manufacturing process. Mast should be deck stepped or Hunter should engineer an acceptable mast boot. (I made one out of some clear vinyl matt). There should be a place on the stern where a retractable stern ladder could be affixed. There should be a moulded-in anchor well on the bow.
