Review of the Hunter 410 by tom baas

Year built 2002
Location of boat Kentucky Lake / USA
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 23-30 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes it has been great / but if I was involved with designing it I would have concedered the possibilite that some people like to race as will as cruise / I like performance / with the small head sail in 15 plus int heads up good in light winds it just is so so and down wind with out a wisker pole it dose not do to good. As you probable have all ready figured out I am one off of the two sail boats going in the same direction and it is a race. Problem with this boat you can not put a bigger head sail on it because of the standing rigging to the out side of the boat if you go bigger and out side you loose you pointing up closer to the wind. So much for that little problem / my Wife says leave it alone. BACK TO THE Problem at hand: the boat came wth sails made in Japan and the main sail clew straps broke ??? Should they have broken ?? is this a problem ? I was tolled that they should be checked every year is this prue?.
Gear that's been added Raymarine all /flate screen tv monitor / blowers / fans / generator / spinnericker. getting ready to add a reverse arch to mount radar and hange dingy.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features comfort
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The straps on the clews of my main sail / broke in 17 nots of wind 2 seasons old / head sail straps look frade and I was tolled look like sun deteriation. could it be that the sails made by north sails japan have bad straps that deteriate in the sun? has anyone eless experanced this? I have a loose wheel the ID of the wheel and OD. of the shaft are such that I have a clearance of about 0.015" to 0.020" one small spirial lock ring and the hub nut that holds it on / hub nut keeps coming loose wheel loose and free movement side to side / loose key do to bad fit of shaft? I think so. Wench location for head sails. pools of water on floor around the wheel.
Sailing characterisitcs Great/ but / not as fast as some other boats.
Motoring characterisitcs two blade prope / no power / changed to a 3 blabe feathering prope / faster under sail and power to drive boat / backing up is really bad I have backed other boats of same size up and they just seam to do it with less speed and go where you want them to go.
Liveability Great / Me and Wife / children all gone.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Very Good / Exceepte 1 time My paper that came with the boat called out that I had a 75HP engine in it / this would have been a turbo engine / but I could not find the turbo on the engine so I called them and ask when I would get the turbo / lady was rude and told me that they never did or would put a 75hp turbo in a 410 / I asked why did my paper work say that thats what it had and the salesmen that sold me the boat said that I was lucky I got a 75hp. I found out latter that she was probable the one the did the paper work. all said and done I asked them to just get the paper work right for the coast guard.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Good Dealings / No answer on the pools of water on the floor around the wheel / exceept they dont now what to do about it. I guess that did not get in touch with hunter or if they did they just said the molds are bad and we do not make that boat any more?
Other comments I have above stated things correctly to the best of my memory and Knowledge. This should cover the leagal aspect of my comments. PS. Comments back on clew straps Thank you Tom Baas
