Review of the Hunter 146 by Ed Gordon

Year built 2004
Location of boat Gulf Coast
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely! It's the best dinghy I've ever owned.
Gear that's been added A small block to replace the outhaul eye strap, a forestay halyard (The boat has a roller-furling jib, but we use it while out on the water to keep the boom up when the main is down), a wind vane at the top of the mast, a hiking strap.
Structural or complex improvements None.
The boat's best features It sails in practically no wind. It moves, when I can't feel any wind at all. It floats in like 4 inches of water, and it can't sink. Even when fully capsized it turns back over easily when you pull on the centerboard.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Everything works great so far. We're still waiting for water to enter the bilge, but even after capsizing, and heavy sailing, it's bone dry. I can't speak for all hunter craft, but this boat seems well manufactured.
Sailing characterisitcs It heads up in strong wind, but don't they all? It's easily corrected with steering, and we kind of like that aspect. It helps us know exactly how close to the wind we can go in any given gust. The boat is tippy. I can capsize it just by sitting alone one one side or the other and leaning out a little. But this comes from the hull design, which in my opinion also makes it quite fast under sail. I think it's more like a racer than a day sailer. You have to watch your balance while in the boat, but that's what makes it really move.
Motoring characterisitcs We don't have a motor on it.
Liveability It's a dinghy.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Fine. We paid cash and drove it away.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
