Review of the Hunter 27_75-84 by Benny Lopez

Owner bought the boat in 2003  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I would we wanted a boat small enough that we could go sailing every day if we wanted to but with as much comfort as possible. I like the 6'1"headroom in the cabin, presure water with a 34 gallon tank, head and holding tank, the swing up dining table, bimini top and wheel steering and diesel engine. The boat has a lot of storage area.  
Gear that's been added Pedestal guard, anchor roller with a 22 pound claw, inboard battery charger, Honda 2000 generator, portable AC unit, cushion covers and replaced interior light fixtures. Cockpit shower.  
Structural or complex improvements no  
The boat's best features Roomy, relatively fast with a 150% Genoa on the furler. It is heavy enough at 7000 dry pounds to give a comfortable ride for its size.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The hatches. the locks are broken and I cannot seem to stop them from leaking. The winches are to small. they are ok to handle the sails but I have not tried to get someone up the mast but I can tell it will be real hard.  
Sailing characterisitcs I have the 4'3" keel and it points relatively well in winds up to 25 knots. All the lines and halyards lead to the cockpit so it is easily single handled. Even though this is the tall rig the main sail is very small as with boats of that time. It is easy to get up and down.  
Motoring characterisitcs Underpowered, the 1GM yanmar vibrates quite badly at certain RPMs. The good thing is that once you get it started is actually hard to shut it off. It is very economical with a 13 gallon fuel tank. Have not measured but probably in the burn range of 1/3 gallon per hour at 1,500 RPM giving 4 Knots. The prop walks quite a bit to port in reverse, to get out of the slip you have to get it to bite and throw it in neutral to be able to steer. the engine is noisy.  
Liveability To me is good but my wife finds it small. She comes up with improvement ideas and I have to remind her this is a small boat for week end pleasure. Galley is barely adequate and the cooler is not very insulated. It requires lots of ice. It does not have a shower for those cold days. Sleeping accomodations are fair, actually the sofas in the cabin are better for sleeping than for sitting down. The chart table handles a small TV and the storm berth the portable AC.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Not with this boat, it is 20 years old. With a much newer boat they provided adequate support through the warranty period.  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any No it was purchased directly from an individual in dire need to part with it.  
Other comments Good solid boat. It was the cheapest 27 of its class and the components show it but the hull and the rigging are strong.
