Review of the Hunter 37 by Mickey Goodman

Year built 1988
Location of boat East Greenwich, RI
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely! This is a great boat for both day sailing as well as weekend and short vacation use. I also "solo sail" quite often and find with all the lines going back to the cockpit it is a easy boat to "single hand". The only issue I have is getting back into the slip without any help.
Gear that's been added Dodger, Sun shade, Windless, Deck Windless Switches, Cockpit Windless Switch, Autopilot, Autopilot Remote, Inverter, Radar, Chartplotter/GPS, Ram Mike at Helm, Engine Shut-Off Switch at Engine Control Panel at Helm, Drinking Water Filter, TV, VCR, DVD Player, Air Conditioner/Heater
Structural or complex improvements Built additional storage cabinet in place of "Captain's birth
The boat's best features Sails well and easy to "single hand". Sail well is stiff breezes. Easy sail handling with all lines going back to the cockpit.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Placement of the traveler at the entrance to the cabin in inconvenient and gets in the way. Continious loop for the Jenny Roller Furler prevents reefing the jenny is stiff winds due to heavy winds blowing out the reef. Narrow cockpit, compared to newer models, prevents easy line handling when docking. Requires a second person on board. Anchor locker not deep enough to have good placement of the windless to allow automatic stowage of road and chain. This requires two people on board, one at the helm and the other at the anchor locker to assist in the stowing of the road and chain.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat sails well in both lite air and heavy weather, easy to single hand, points well, no "prop walk" issues, in-boom single line reefing works well.
Motoring characterisitcs No prop walk. Motors well usually at about 6 knots speed at 3100 rpms.
Liveability The cabin is "less spacious" then the new model boats but would be comfortable for one to two people to live aboard for a few weeks. More than that there would be a storage issue.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter has been a great help with this boat. I purchased it after it had a cabin fire and restored and replaced the items that were damaged in the fire. The Hunter folks were extremely helpful and answered all the questions I had. I should also say that the Hunter Owner Association were also extremely helpful. Without their help the renovation would have beem much more difficult. I have made some good friends in the association.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
