Review of the Hunter 22 by Matt Borders

Year built 1965
Location of boat Colonial Beach, VA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes!!!! The boat sails great and it is very comfortable. There is a lot of space in the boat!
Gear that's been added Bimini, GPS (Garmin GPS Map 76), Tiller Tamer (A must have), VHF, bilge pump
Structural or complex improvements I have not had to do too much to the structure of the boat. I have a ding in my centerboard that I need to repair (need to modify the trailer a little to prevent further dinging)
The boat's best features The boat sails nice. The cockpit has a lot of room. The cabin has a lot of space for a 22 foot boat. The controls are straight forward and my wife who has never sailed before is learning them very quickly.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Had a small leak in the starboard side scupper. I painted the underside with resin and fixed that. I had a leak at the starboard side chainplate, had to recalk that. I also had a leak on the starboard side life rail post (still battling that). Replaced all of the running lights. Still need to work on the steaming light and the ancor light.
Sailing characterisitcs Had the boat out in very light winds. I was still making 3-4 knots. Very responsive. I can tell that the reef will come early when the wind blows.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors well. I have a Johnson 4.5 hp outboard and I make 6 knots. Be careful if the rudder kicks up because it can hit the prop on the outboard!
Liveability Looking forward to extended weekends on the Potomac River and the Chesepeake Bay. Plenty of room for my wife and I. Surprised with the room in the 22. I have been on bigger boats with less room.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Ordered an owners manuel from them. It was a pretty rough copy. Charged me $20 and it wasn't even in color!
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any None....bought the boat privately
Other comments Nice boat! Very nice lines on it! It is a pleasure to sail and it trailers well.
