Review of the Hunter 26.5 by Wes Colley

Year built 1988
Location of boat St Petersburg, Fla
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, definitely. I wanted a sailboat that I could single hand. I previously had a Hunter 34, which I loved but was just too much boat. The 26.5 is just about right. It is fast. I have won both races against much larger boats(32-35 ft). It is easy to sail. My biggest complaint is the outboard motor bracket, it should have been installed on the port side. It is very hard to raise the motor Nissan 9.9 and lock in the up position when under way and to lower because the lock bar is on the wrong side of the motor.
Gear that's been added A Furlong roller furler and a Garmin GPS.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Light, easy to sail, fast and cheap to maintain
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The electrical system.
Sailing characterisitcs I day sail in Tampa Bay and we have a lot of thunderstorms so as I have gotten older I sail smarter. I do not have to prove anything any longer. If it looks bad we go in.
Motoring characterisitcs
Liveability N/A
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any No
Other comments I sure like my 26.6 a lot better than the new 26 with water ballest
