Review of the Hunter 44DS by Fred Krohn

Year built 2004
Location of boat Belmont Harbor Chicago
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 6
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? In a New York minute. I love this boat, the Hunter company and my dealer Racine Riverside. What more can I say. This has been a great experience and so much better than when I bought my last new boat in 1997. (Catalina 36)
Gear that's been added Everything. From generator to stereos
Structural or complex improvements none
The boat's best features Quality. Handling. Comfort. Creature things that were designed into the boat that I only discovered after I purchased
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Most everything worked fine and those items that didn't were taken care of very professionally by my dealer.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails great in light and heavy conditions
Motoring characterisitcs Performs very well
Liveability Better than being at home
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Toured the factory before purchasing and was most impressed with the people and the facilities. A far cry from the other boat manufactures's plants that I have toured.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any This dealer has been great. Also before I bought I asked Hunter where I might be able to sail a 44DS. They put me in contact with a dealer in Newport who gave up a half of a day to take me out on the boat knowing full well that I was not going to purchase a boat from him. That speaks well for the "Hunter family network of dealers"
Other comments A GREAT BOAT With quality you would expect only in a so called high value boat like a Tarten (overrated) compared to the Hunter line
