Review of the Hunter 336 by Dan Ferguson

Year built 1996
Location of boat North Chesapeake Bay
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It's the third Hunter for us and we are comfortable with the weather helm, fast close-haul and beam reach, no running directly down wind. For balance of sailing performance, comfort it's great.
Gear that's been added Autohelm with GPS, wind meter, AC, asymetrical spinnaker, Dutchman mainsail control lines. Dodger, bimini.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Cockpit layout and expanse; interior layout - very bright and airy, roomy; sail configuration (big roachy main, relatively small jib - gets the most out of the light winds of the north C Bay)
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Dutchman mainsail tracks - never again, they are worthless (this was not a Hunter issue, previous owner decision as an add-on). Wish I could throw back the helm seat without having to put the swin ladder in the water. Some of the top deck fiberglass seems to have damaged easily (although it may have been a clumsy previous owner) Storing the hatch panels easily scratches the plexiglas one Should have put in a windlass A couple of floor panels don't quite fit, can be noisy when stepping on them
Sailing characterisitcs Strong weather helm, once you get used to it, it's an advantage as she flies close-hauled when that perfect tack is hit Also fast on the beam, that big main can transfer alot of power to the hull With the swept-back spreaders, you need to jibe more often when going directly down wind; jibing that big main takes concentration I reef a little sooner than with a conventional sized main, still get max speed
Motoring characterisitcs Good motoring characteristics, even backing up Easy to steer, seems to get good speed (5-6K) with 2800-3000 rpms
Liveability Super, no one matchs Hunter in this category foot-to-foot. Cockpit very comfortable 2-4, even 4 adulta and 2 kids. Deck is easy to get around on - just have to learn how and where to grab the shrouds to swing around them Inside described about, can't imagine a more comfortable layout on a 33.5 ft. hull
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Always top rate. Our guy is Bill Sawyer at Havre de Grace. We will always go back to him and Tidewater HdG in the future.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Great experience (see above comments about Tidewater HdG)
