Review of the Hunter 280 by David Taylor

Year built 1996
Location of boat Nashville, TN
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes fits our needs perfectly. Has the functionality of the bigger boats, just not as roomy.
Gear that's been added * Put port and starboard cam cleats back near the wheel. Space where Hunter puts the aft wenches (when needed). This allows me to work the jib w/o leaving the area behind the wheel. * Split up the AC power from the starboard outlets. The outlet in the Galley is now run off the "microwave" breaker (our microwave happens to be back there anyway). This allows me to run two separate ceramic heaters off the starboard outlets. * Installed battery charger
Structural or complex improvements See above
The boat's best features Functionality for a small cruiser: 6ft + headroom Head with holding tank (private chamber) Hot & cold pressure water Diesel engine AC Shore Power Single handling capability Sails well - some complain about the downwind capability (B&R Rig), but I don't care. Never sailed that way much anyway. Not racing these days.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Only AC power arrangement, which I fixed.
Sailing characterisitcs Since 9 years old about everything.
Motoring characterisitcs Not much
Liveability Very good for my wife and I on weekends.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Always good.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
