Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? No, for the summer of 2003, I worked at the Baltimore County Sailing Center which had just purchased a fleet of 42 Hunter Xcites. These boats were very poorly constructed.
Gear that's been added A aluminum brace in the middle of the foot well to add to the structural integrity.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Plastic construction which took bumps and the collisions that occur when 8 year olds are sailing.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Once again these boats were horribly constructed. All 42 boats dismasted because the mast pin sheared. Many sheared from forces as small as roll tacking in 1 knot of wind. The pins were not even welded together. The pin was only peened into the backing plate. 4 masts broke when sailing in winds of 10-12 knots. If you would like me to email you pictures I will. 20 boats leaked because of a very poor bond between the deck and hull and some leaked because of a poor bond in the centerboard case. Hardware was generally poorly placed or constructed, particularly the outhaul cam/cleat peice. A nice idea that didn't work.
Sailing characterisitcs Does not point very high at all. Because the hull is so soft every wave or power boat wake causes the boat to flex and slow down dramatically. Mast flexes way to much and makes pointing in light air slow, it is nice in heavy air but if it is windy enouph to need the very bendy mast, the rest of the boat will not hold up.
Motoring characterisitcs
Liveability
