Review of the Hunter 19_81-83 by Christopher Rieger

Year built 1981
Location of boat Kentucky Lake
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? For the price I paid ($300), it is a wonderful little boat to play with in my spare time.
Gear that's been added Just standard peripherals to make day and overnight trips more comfortable.
Structural or complex improvements No, but I plan to wire the boat for night sailing.
The boat's best features The best thing about the boat is that it is a small and light design, easily piloted by a single person. The centerboard makes it easy to get in and about shallow bays around the lake.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The design is poor in that a good gust of wind will send me over if not careful. The boat was previously used by the summer camp at which I work as part of our week-long high adventure program.
Sailing characterisitcs The standard jib and main work exceptionally well in winds over 7-8 knots. Anything less than this speed can be quite annoying as the boat doesn't seem to gather any power no matter how the sails are trimmed.
Motoring characterisitcs I plan to put a samller outboard on, no bigger than 5 hp. Previous experience with a Johnson 6 hp has shown the boat to suffer from little vibration. When one pulls up the centerboard, you essentially have a jon boat with a mast.
Liveability It is acceptable for a few days, but it is little more than a day-tripper or overnighter.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
