Review of the Hunter 356 by Tom Chastain

Year built 2003
Location of boat Glen Cove NY
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I find the H 356 just what I was looking for. I often sail alone or with someone that is not able to help with the sails. This boat puts everything where I need and handles with ease. The furling main is the biggest factor in my trading up to this boat.
Gear that's been added I added the windlass and instruments, including Autopilot.
Structural or complex improvements No, I changed to wine holder in the lower drawer.
The boat's best features Best features are the value for cost. This boat was within my budget as a new boat. The other things include ease of handling the boat with the large main and smaller geona.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Most problems were in the prep of the boat at the sales yard. Some items left loose and some not done at all. So far, the boat has offered few problems.
Sailing characterisitcs Great sailing boat for solo or with limited crew experience. I just say sit back and let me handle the boat. This boat with the furling main and smaller jib is extremely easy to handle and takes variations of wind speed without alarming the guests on board.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors well, good speed with standard prop, walks to port a lot in reverse but that helps me to back into the dock.
Liveability This boat is very good in layout and space. Much improved over my previous boat which was a 1983 H-34. Cockpit is tight with the tables up but offers lots of room when serving cocktails and dinner.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have not dealt directly with Hunter.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from Long Island Yacht Sales. They were good and delivered as promised. Minor items were missed but I would go back again. They were very helpful and worked the finances with me. Glen and Bill are very nice guys to deal with but because of that they are also very busy. Just be patient and they get it done.
Other comments I bought this boat to take me into retirement in 5 to 10 years. I love it and would make the trade up again to this boat anytime.
