Review of the Hunter 340 by Jim White

Year built 1998
Location of boat Middle River, Maryland
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, It a great boat. We have had it for one summer and it has been a wonderful toy for the entire family. Very confortable for all. The layout is great and spacious for a 34 footer.
Gear that's been added I have added Air Conditioning and refrigeration which has made a big difference in being confortable aboard. Cockpit cushons from Bottomsiders was another plus. Added a chartplotter from Garmin. I don't know what I would have done without the chartplotter. The Cheaspeak bay is soooooooooooo big and there are many places a chart would not handle on the depth side. I think that the furling main would be a great addition as well. This may have to wait for next year.
Structural or complex improvements No boat is as purchased in April of 2003
The boat's best features The swim platform and aft shower are great. we are not campers so the gally does not get much use. As a matter of fact never lit off oven or stove. It is very well planned out. I am pleased with the all the thought that went into the 340. The pedistal steering is great as well having had tiller boats from Catalina in the past.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I had to replace the Macerator motor this this year the impeller went south on me. The gages for fuel and waste acted up. I had to repair the fuel guage and the waste tank reads full all the time. I guess I will have to replace that this winter. There is a problen with a smell from the head. I have been on the Hunter Owners web page and this appears to be a problem. The fix seems to be replacing the hoses. I will try that this winter. The bilge pump and float switch were running all the time. The back flow from the bilge pump was enough to trigger the float switch . I disconnected and used the manual switch for this year. The wheel lock is broken. I could not engage it so I have been using the autp pilot for a wheel lock.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat handles well. This is my 4th sailboat always moving up. Th 4 1/2 foot draft is more than what I have been use to and takes some getting familar with your chartplotter and deph sounder. The boat handles nicely. The wheel steering needs a lot of attention. If you don't have a good hold on it . It can slam either to port or starbord. Its a lot of boat and the upkeep is that of a small home. lots of work
Motoring characterisitcs Fine. plenty of weight to get me thru those busy channels with 50 foot cruisers blowing by at 25 knots.
Liveability Very confortable. We stay over night at marinas and use their reasturants. the sleeping is very spacious for a family of 4.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have not dealt with Hunter
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Sandy Hook yacht Sales brokered my boat to me. The Broker was Dave Adolf. He was very attentive to all my needs. I would reccommend him to anyone dealing with Sandy Hook.
Other comments A good choice and a reasonable price. I am sure we will have many fun years with this toy.
