Review of the Hunter 260 by Jeff Peltier

Year built 1998
Location of boat Pelican Lake, Mn
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I like the boat, but I have had several problemswith the quality of the Fiberglass in the bottom of the boat. I will reserve comment on this untilafter I see how Hunter and the Dealer handle theseproblems. So far, talk is cheap.
Gear that's been added Spinnaker (dealer installed the halyard too close to the forestay and it wraps up in the roller furler. CDI roller furler (works great). Wheel steering, outboard motor with remote controls(I also made a connecting rod with a quick disconnect on the rudder plate so I can control the thrust when docking or putting on the lift)Stereo, Seat cushions.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Roomy cockpit which is made roomier by the wheeland corner seats. Plenty of room below. Nice sized head for a boat this size.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I have had several leaks in the hull and ballast tank. The bilge pump is so poorly located, the boat would have to be sinking before it would do any good. Cutting a 6
Sailing characterisitcs Sails well on all points, a little tender when agust first hits (typical of water ballast). I havehad no problem ballancing the boat even though there seems to be a lot of comments on this. Spinnaker really makes it go on a reach. I use the1st reef at about 20k unless I have passengers that like a more sedate ride, then 15K.
Motoring characterisitcs I have the remote controls, but after trying to land in a cross wind a few times, I desided to make a connecting rod from the motor to the ruddersteering plate with a spring loaded disconnect onthe rudder end. Being able to control the thrust greatly improves the manuverablity. I disconnect it most of the time while sailing, with the loose end being teathered by a small line and light spring.
Liveability
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have had several problems with the hull on thisparticular boat. Hunter says they will take careof problems after the season and reemberse me for the time I have spent fixing leaks and other problems. I am not sure if they will replace the hull or try to fix it. Talk is cheap, I'll reserve judgement until I'm confident the problems are taken care of. One big disappointmentis that after buying a brand new boat, neither Hunter or the dealer would come up and look at the boat.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any So far, lots of promises, but not much action.I have had to solve all my own problems. I amfortunate my day job is design and engineering. As with Hunter, I will reserve final judgementuntil these problems are solved.
