Review of the Hunter 37-cutter by Donald

Year built 1984
Location of boat Gulf Port FL
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely, I love the verstility of sailing options. In ruff sailing conditions it would be better to have the head located further aft. That however is a minor trade off as we try to avoid really ruff conditions.
Gear that's been added Just an inverter and duel station VHF. I did have to replace the waste water holding tank which required removing the old tank. That was a project since I had to cut the old tank apart. I then decided to install an 18 gallon tank in the center of the V berth area. I really don't feel that we lost much in the way of storage with the new location. And the postive is that I need only to look at the side of the tank to see if it is time to empty.
Structural or complex improvements none
The boat's best features It seems like a well built boat for a production builder.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I don't feel that the stay sail is set up properly. Trimming often requires going forward to assist the sheet line to get a good trim.
Sailing characterisitcs I like the sailing even in gusty conditions as the shear weight of the boat keeps her from excessive heeling. Provided I am not overpowered she just picks up speed. At around 25 degrees heel we do start to loose rudder control and need to reduce sail.
Motoring characterisitcs The prop walk to port in reverse was difficult to get used to. (I am still trying) However in all other conditions it has plenty of power and decent fuel economy. The noise level (at 2400 and higher) is a little strong. Most of the time when motoring we cruise at around 2 to 2100 which is fine and we are doing about 5 to 6 knots.
Liveability The boat is really only good for two to three people with regard to living aboard for extended periods. Maybe two adults and two children would be ok but just my wife and I it is great.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The broker seemed to be unconcerned as to weather the boat sale went through or not. They also did some shoddy paper work.
Other comments I think that Hunter should pay more attention when beding rigging and port lights.
