Review of the Hunter Vision-36 by Joe Sulham

Year built 1993
Location of boat Seattle, WA area (Semiahmoo Marina)
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It has great space below decks compared to its length. The walk through aft cabin and ease of sailing are the two most important factors that led me to purchase it.
Gear that's been added Vacuflush head, Max Prop, dripless seal, replaced holding tank with a plastic one, chart plotter, reefer in icebox.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Ease of sailing, cabin headroom, large stand up/walk through aft cabin, walk through head, free standing spar mast.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Traveler through bolts are not easily removable. It will take some major work to remove the traveler in order to remove the spray hood which I would like to do, so I can service the sheaves that are located under it.
Sailing characterisitcs Great downwind, doesn't point very high. (fractional rig with only a 110% jib) Very easy to tack with the small jib. Will take gusting well and spill out the top of the mainsail. It sails well in light air. I have sailed it with full main and jib in 28 kts true windspeed and attained speeds of 8.5 kts while reaching.
Motoring characterisitcs Much imporvements since adding the Max Prop. I can eaisly reach 6.5 kts motoring, without motorsailing, at below 2400 rpm.
Liveability Great for a couple. Front vee berth is a little short on length and can be done for about a week if your guests don't exceed 6'.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Purchased from Signature Yachts. Chapin (broker I delt with) was excellent! If I were to purchase another vessel I would seek him out again.
Other comments I guess the boat wasn't received by the public very well and that is a shame. Seems a lot of people want to be "traditionalist" and seek a vessel with a traditional mast and shrouds. Folly be on them. I have no chainplates to reckon with below decks or on the hull. I don't have to tune the rigging and the shrouds will never have to be replaced since they don't exist. The shrouds don't get in the way on deck either ;-) Boat tracks well and the rudder is a good size as she responds well at speeds less than 1 kt while docking and backing. The configuration of her sailplan makes it very easy to sail without having to crank and grind on huge 150 genny deck sweepers. Since most of the sail is on the main I can easily tack her by myself, usually without having to crank in the jib sheet, by just looping the winch as I come about.
