Review of the Hunter 90 by Charles Brush

Year built 1987
Location of boat Buck's Harbor, Maine
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. She is a dry boat with the interior layout of a center cockpit while still being a aft cockpit boat. Tons of storage and people space A sail that can actually back under control
Gear that's been added Currently installing a Fast Track system on the mast.
Structural or complex improvements Simplified the head plumbing. The head discharge goes to the tank direct. OB is from the holding tank. This removed 2 Y valves. Currently setting thehead to draw flush water from the sink OB. Placing a T in the sink OB just below the water line. Below that an inline valve was installed. This allows salt water to be used during onboard time, but at the end of the trip, close the inline, run fresh into the sink and draw it into the head. Also reduces the through hulls by 2.
The boat's best features ON deck and below deck space
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Odor from the head areas has been problematic but now under control. Access to replace lines, etc could be better.
Sailing characterisitcs Great We reef between 15 & 20. She sails better upright than laid over
Motoring characterisitcs Awesome. Outstanding control both ahead and backing.
Liveability It is
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Helpful but not as much as I would have hoped. The standard response is "we don't have much detail, but this is what I remember. Delievery materials received we when bought the boat used were minimal. My yardstick of measurement comes from the fire service. We have a 1927 Seagrave pumper. We were able to contact them and get the schematics, plumbing, construction plans from them. Hopefully Hunter is keeping better records now.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Brokers a broker
Other comments For the cost, the value is there. We are comfortable with her in light and heavy weather.
