Review of the Hunter 18.5 by Jon Borys

Year built 1989
Location of boat Green Bay WI
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? It is a good boat, but I would like a bigger one now.
Gear that's been added Shore power, misc fittings, Replaced the main sheet fiddle block with one that I can uncleat easier in strong winds.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features It has a nice sized cockpit for a small boat
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I can't adjust the rudder, sometimes it 'floats' up on me. The compass fouls the jib sheet. The way that main sheet cleated was had to decleat in gusts of wind, this was scarry for a beginner.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat points well and sails well on all points. Its a lot of fun and very easy to sail. The water can get choppy in the bay and I feel very confident.
Motoring characterisitcs I'm not very good at motoring in and out of the slip, but its not the boats fault.
Liveability Overnight only. Perfect for daysailing.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No Experience
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Fox River Marina in Appleton WI. Good people, received beginner ASA trainning there.
