Review of the Hunter 26.5 by Brandon Bassett

Year built 1989
Location of boat Dallas, TX
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, The Hunter has the most room of any of the other similar size boats I looked at. I love it.
Gear that's been added Replaced anchor line and chain. Added a solar panel. Replaced various pulleys for wear. Added some interior power connections.
Structural or complex improvements Bottom Job.
The boat's best features I like it's interior and cockpit room. The swim ladder is great, and I like the cockpit engine controls. Also, the shallower draft allows me to go some places similar size boat with deeper drafts can't go, and move in closer to shore.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The 8 hp. Tohatsu engine, when on very low power, will stall when making a sharp turn, like turning into a slip. In higher wind and wave action it will stall at a slightly higher power. The jib must be removed or raised to remove or replace the anchor comfortably.
Sailing characterisitcs In light wind(5mph) with no waves the boat will sail itself with no rudder lock.In 5 to 15mph the boat sail great. No complaints. In winds of 20mph and over the boat becomes a little much for me to handle alone. Someone else is usually required.
Motoring characterisitcs The prop tends to come out of the water in larger waves while motoring. At low power the motor tends to stall in tight turns. My 8hp Tohatsu motor has been very reliable with no mechanical problems so far. The cockpit controls was another important consideration while I looked for a boat. I have had no problems with it. It gets great fuel efficency.
Liveability I have spent several nights on it. Once I took my parents out for the weekend. The boat was very liveable and comfortable in all cases. With the teak interior well oiled, the boat gives off a warm, inviting feeling.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No experience.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any No
