If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely! Jane and I both were guilty of "Hunter Discrimination" prior to seeing Aloha 1 for the first time, vainly considering ourselves purists, who would never own a tupperware boat. How foolish we were!! We had very clear requirements when we went shopping for a boat, and were totally surprised to find that the h30 filled all of our needs, at a most reasonable price. Cabin volume, stability, ease of maintenance, and the sheer thrill of a rail down reach in this boat would make me buy her again. Absolutely!
Gear that's been added When we bought Aloha 1, she was an "original equipment" boat. We pulled the alcohol stove and installed a Force 10 propane 2 burner, a Force 10 cabin heater and a cockpit BBQ. We built a proper vented propane locker in the port side of the stern locker to house the propane tanks. In addition to these comforts we added a Sony/Alpine CD sound system, new Standard Horizon chartplotter, DSC VHF, and depthsounder (all NMEA compatible). All new running rigging, boom vang, and a better set-up for the mainsheet.
Structural or complex improvements Total repair of the mast compression post base, construction of the propane locker, and repair of the rudder skeg (cosmetic mostly).
The boat's best features Without any doubt, cabin volume and useable space rank highly. I believe only a Catalina 30 has more volume. She's an easy boat to look after, as well. We like sailing, not maintaining!! And does she ever sail!!! The breezes here in the Strait of Georgia can be as exciting as anywhere, and we sailed some 35+kts stuff this summer on her shakedown....what a blast!!! and she loves going fast...weatherhelm be damned!!
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing that I couldn't deal with. Little stuff mostly, age related as well.
Sailing characterisitcs Weatherhelm. Other than that, nothing negative, lots of positive. Fast and stable..
Motoring characterisitcs She will not back to starboard. Period.
Liveability It's awesome. We were out for all of August, and had a gas...didn't want to come home.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Nothing to report.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Don't care to say.. It wasn't good.
Other comments We love her. Period.
